Shirakawa-go village consists of a group of huge wooden buildings of farmhouses. These farmhouses have steep thatched roofs. They are called Gasshozukuri, which literally means palms of hands joined together in prayer. Visiting two of these huge farmhouses will usher us into further understanding of the inside structure. It is amazing to see these huge wooden farmhouses and to know that they were built almost 200 years ago by common people. Takayama half day walking tour

kusakabeinside.JPG takayamaoldhouses.JPG

Tour Features Hida-Takayama lies in the Takayama Basin at an altitude of about 600 meters. The city is surrounded by mountains and forests. This region is covered more than 90 percent with forest. The city is said to have originally developed by skilled wood-craftsmen about 1,300 years ago. It is said that carpenters from this region were sent to Nara and Kyoto, old capitals to work for construction of  Imperial Palaces and Temples. In the Edo Period of about 400 years ago, Kanamori family, a local lord of Takayama built the castle and the town spending 16 years. Generations of lords of Kanamori ruled this area for more than 100 years. During the Kanamori reign, traditional arts and crafts such as Shunkei-nuri Lacquerware, woodwork, tea ceremony and so on were thrived under the encouragement and sponcership of Lords of Kanamori. All of a sudden Tokugawa Shogunate relocated Lord of Kanamori to Tohoku region and directly ruled this area for about 170 years. Tokugawa Shogunate's financial difficulty is said to be one of the reasons of the surprise relocation. Merchant Houses of Edo period remain in Sanmachi and Shimoninomachi-Oshinmachi districts as they were in the past. These two districts are designated as the Preservation Districts for Group of Traditional Buildings. The lines of latticework windows of old houses give tourists dear old atmosphere of good old days of Japan. Takayama is also famous for its festival, one of the three most famous festvals in Japan. It takes place twice a year, Spring Festival and Autumn Festival. Spring Festival proceeds during April 14 and 15 with 12 floats' procession, and Autumn during October 9 and 10 with 11 floats.
